Have you always wanted to procure your seedlings (fingerlings) from a far farm but were scared they might die before getting to your farm? Or you probably had a bad experience sometimes when you transported your fingerlings?

In this article, I’m going to show you how you can successfully Transport your fingerlings from one farm to another with no mortality.

Different Fish farmers transport their fingerlings in various containers. The most common is the use of Jerry can (keg) often of 50L.

In this article, am not going to be using the Jerry Can but the Plastic Bag (Nylon Bag).

In this article, I’ll show you the entire process for you to successfully transport your fingerlings with no or less mortality … step-by-step.

Before diving into the steps, here are the criteria or conditions you have to fulfill before embarking on transporting your fingerlings:

Ensure you handle them at low temperatures (evening, overnight, or early in the morning).

Starve them for 4–5 hours before embarking on the transportation- this enables them to empty their guts

Now let’s dive into the process, I mean steps.

Get a Plastic Bag

Get a 20 Litres plastic bag (Nylon Bag), preferably a black color background.

Fill in water

Fill in water up to 5 liters, which is one-quarter of the bag.

Put your Fish into the bag

Put 200g of your Fish into the plastic bag. The bag should be able to contain 100 pieces of fingerlings with an average weight of 2g. Then, Press out air from inside.

Inflate the bag

Bubble oxygen through the water and blow extra oxygen to inflate the bag, after which you can remove the pipe and tie the bag tightly.

Fish ready to be transported

You can then transport your fingerlings for 12 hours depending on the temperature and level of stress. Ensure you keep the fingerlings in the dark cardboard boxes to minimize stress.

Note: On arrival at your farm, do not introduce or pour the fish directly into your pond. Firstly suspend the container or bag containing fish in the water until the temperature inside and outside is roughly equal. Water from the pond should then gradually be poured into the container until it can be removed from underneath the fingerlings, which can swim free.

Conclusion

That’s all there is to it. That’s how to successfully Transport your fingerlings from one farm to another. The best part is that you can achieve this when following the conditions and process I stated in this article.

If you found this post useful, I’d really appreciate it if you would share this on Facebook

I’d also like to hear from you: have you ever transported your fingerlings from another farm? What media of transport did you use? Leave a comment and let me know.
